Dundee’s food businesses have the worst hygiene in Scotland, The Courier can reveal.
Nearly 300 city eateries failed hygiene inspections carried out by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
Dundee’s 76 per cent pass rate from the 1198 businesses investigated under the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) gave it the lowest pass rate in the whole country.
The figure compared badly with pass rates in other Courier Country regions, with Fife (97 per cent), Perth and Kinross (98 per cent) and Angus (93 per cent).
Hundreds of Dundee restaurants and takeaways were slapped with an ‘improvement required’ rating, meaning they had “not achieved an acceptable level of compliance with requirements of food hygiene law”.
Labour Environment spokesperson Richard McCready slammed the figures and demanded that unhygienic restaurants make their customers aware they have failed.
He said: “These figures are very concerning. Food hygiene should be the top priority for all caterers in Dundee.
“Customers need to know whether the food outlets they use take food hygiene seriously or not.
“I will be asking the council whether it is possible to insist that this information is displayed.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said they always tried to provide as much help and assistance as is possible to the owners and operators in order to help them improve their standards of safety and hygiene.
