Lochee High Street has become a ghost town, according to a young business woman who was driven out by falling sales.
After a year in Lochee, 22-year-old Rudy Knight has now moved her fashion boutique into Commercial Street.
Rudy had help setting up in her first shop but said she had no choice but to move to the city centre after the introduction of the one-way system in Lochee.
She said: “I was in Lochee High Street for just over a year. I am from that area and at that time the town was too dear for me.
“I did do well in Lochee to begin with but the last four months, when they were changing the road to the one-way system, all the businesses were losing money.
“A lot of cars just wouldn’t stop and even after the works finished there just aren’t enough signs.
“People would go down the road the wrong way and a lot of people are just avoiding Lochee because of that.
“It became like a ghost town. I wanted to move sometime but I had no choice after that.”
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “The face of Lochee is changing. We are in the process of a multi-million-pound regeneration which will benefit the area for years to come.
“The new road layout is an essential part in making sure the project is a success.”
Rudy, a former Dundee and Angus College fashion textile student, decided to set up her own business, Rudy’s Rags Boutique, after working in a high street clothes shop.
She said: “I started making clothes at college then worked on the high street and decided it wasn’t for me.
“I wanted to set up my own boutique so I went to the Business Gateway and got some help from the Prince’s Trust.
“I try to be different from any other boutique. Since I have moved I have been a lot busier and I have had people coming in who never came to Lochee.
“I do have more outgoings but I also have a year’s experience from running my first shop.”
The shop is open from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. It also has a Facebook page.
