Dundee University Students’ Association has defended one of its bouncers after a Facebook video of him refusing entry to a customer went viral overnight.
Jamie Shankland posted the video after bouncers refused him entry on Tuesday night.
In his comment accompanying the video, Mr Shankland speculated he had been refused because of his body art.
He said: “Think it’s shocking the way Union treat students. It seems to be a recurring trend.
“They told me it’s because I wasn’t a Dundee University student and I heard him snigger something about my tattoos. Again another case of discrimination.”
The clip has been watched more than 30,000 times in less than 24 hours.Post by Jamie Shankland. However, DUSA president Iain MacKinnon said the bouncer had been right to refuse Mr Shankland because there were already too many non-students in the union.
“As a private members’ club for students at the University of Dundee we exist to provide the safest possible environment for the students we represent,” he said.
“We do not have to give a reason as to why we are refusing entry on the night.
“We have a reciprocal agreement with other institutions which allow their students entry, and all students can sign in four guests, but in this situation the ratio of Dundee students to non-Dundee students was very high and as such we wanted to restrict entry to specifically those students which we are here for as in the past when we allow this ratio to get too high there has been a higher rate of problem incidents.
“All our customer safety staff are SIA trained, and we are well known for being the safest club in Dundee.
“In this case the management fully support the actions of the staff member in question who acted in nothing less than a professional manner.”
