Second Dundee school hit by scarlet fever

A second school in Dundee has been hit by a case of scarlet fever.

Parents at Craigiebarns Primary have been notified by letter of a confirmed case of the illness.

The letter, signed by head teacher Julie Lemon, stated a child at the Brington Road school had been found to have scarlet fever.

It follows news that pupils at Downfield Primary contracted scarlet fever last week.

“We are writing to advise you a case of scarlet fever has been confirmed in a child at this school,” the letter read.

“If you suspect your child may be infected, you should contact your doctor.”

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “In line with medical advice, the school has issued a letter to all parents.

“Guidance about contacting a health professional has been given if anyone thinks their child has scarlet fever.

“The communication also stresses that any pupil with the condition should not attend school for five days after they take their first medication.”

Last week parents at Downfield were sent a note informing them several cases of scarlet fever had been reported.

The local cases come as health authorities in England warn instances of the illness are running at a 24-year high.
