Free public wifi for Dundee city centre under consideration
ByGrant Smith
Dundee City Council is exploring the possibility of setting up free public wifi in the city centre.
West End councillor Fraser Macpherson has asked the local authority what it was doing on the issue.
The head of information technology replied that Dundee had applied to the same funding sources as Edinburgh and Glasgow, which will have systems running by the summer, but had been unsuccessful.
The officer went on: “We are looking at the business case for further city wifi deployment.
“I am working with economic development colleagues to identify how a deployment could be funded, and what type of deployment would meet city needs.
“It appears that offering a mobile provider the right to mount equipment on council street furniture, in return for them providing a free wifi service, is the model that most cities are adopting.”
Mr Macpherson said: “I have been promised updates on progress with this and hope that the city will be able to move forward a free wifi offering in the near future.”
