A consultant at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee has been suspended following the death of a newborn baby.
An internal review has been launched into the tragedy, which took place in the maternity unit on Sunday morning.
Police were called to the unit and are carrying out inquiries while the NHS carry out their own review.
The identity of the consultant has not been revealed.
A spokeswoman for NHS Tayside said: “We are unable to comment on matters relating to individual members of staff.”
However, sources close to the inquiry confirmed that a consultant had been suspended as an investigation took place.
NHS Tayside also declined to comment on the death.
“We are unable to comment on any individual case due to patient confidentiality,” the spokeswoman said.
Police Scotland confirmed it was involved. A spokeswoman said: “We can confirm officers are investigating the death of a baby that happened at Ninewells Hospital on Sunday March 16.
“There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
The labour suite at Ninewells features eight delivery rooms, six beds in an observation area and one high-dependency room. There is also a midwife-led unit.
