Dundee University students have rejected a proposal to ban certain songs from being played in bars and clubs at the students’ association.
The university’s feminist society had proposed a motion that songs such as the controversial hit Blurred Lines, which they argued could potentially trigger post traumatic stress in sexual assault victims, be considered for banning if a complaint was made.
Blurred Lines, by Robin Thicke, was an international success last year but the artist found himself having to deny claims the lyrics promoted rape and sexual abuse.
In an online poll, 714 students voted against the motion and only 157 for.
Another motion, which called on the association to combat “lad culture”, also failed to pass, with 489 votes against, 229 for.
The association said it wanted to make its members aware that it “already campaigns against, or is planning to campaign against, certain aspects of ‘lad culture’ as defined by the proposers at the referendums debate.”
