There wasn’t a dry eye at Grange Primary School when crossing patroller Jessie Low laid down her lollipop for the last time.
The popular 79-year-old shed a tear or two at the end of her 18-year career, and the pupils were sad at saying cheerio to the friendly lady who has escorted them safely across Grange Road.
Even head teacher Lorraine Will admitted that the emotion of the occasion got to her.
“Jessie is loved by everyone and there were more than a few tears on her last day at the school today,” Mrs Will said.
“She has been a real stalwart, turning out in all weathers and always giving the children a cheerful greeting as she helped them across the road.
“We’re all going to miss her, but Jessie’s been here for a long time and she deserves her retirement.”
Jessie said: “I was in tears when I saw the children for the last time.
“I’ve really loved this job. It was a pleasure to see them every day and growing up.
“We all got on very well and I’m going to miss them and the staff.”
Jessie has been at Grange for 10 years and for eight years previously she was a patroller at Eastern Primary.
The Broughty Ferry post was the first vacancy that came up when she applied to be a lollipop lady, and she thought nothing of the daily journey from her Monifieth home.
Jessie will soon be swapping the chilly mornings and afternoons of Monifieth for sunnier climes when she goes on a cruise paid for in part by a cheque for £200 raised by Grange Primary as a farewell gift.
