Tears of sadness, and laughter, at funeral of Dundee United favourite Frank Kopel

Hundreds packed Kirriemuir Old Parish Church today to celebrate the life of former Dundee United footballer Frank Kopel.

The defender, who lifted the league cup twice during a decade at Tannadice, died last week aged 65 following a six-year battle with dementia.

Joining Frank’s family at the service were a host of famous faces from his playing days.

Dundee United stars included David Narey, Paul Hegarty, Davie Dodds, Hamish McAlpine and Maurice Malpas. Also in attendance were former Rangers manager Walter Smith and Dundee legends Jocky Scott and Bobby Glennie.

The poignant ceremony saw mourners wear bright colours at Frank’s wife Amanda’s request, and there was laughter as the congregation heard how Frank had arranged their first date at a football ground later telling friends: “Well, it WAS a cup tie!”

As people filed out of the church, ‘It’s United’ was played a song recorded by Frank and his teammates.

Earlier a private funeral for around 200 mourners was held at Parkgrove Crematorium, Friockheim.
