Dundee City Council is to formally object to the closure of the Royal Bank of Scotland branch in Perth Road.
There was cross-party support for the proposal from West End councillor Richard McCready, who said he was worried about the negative impact on personal and business customers.
Council chief executive David Dorward has been instructed to write to the bank asking for management to reconsider their decision.
RBS intend to shut the branch next month and have said this is part of a nationwide restructuring of their business in response to a downturn in the number of customers coming to branches.
They have insisted that locals will still be able to use an ATM and will have access to basic banking services at a nearby post office.
RBS provide banking services to the city council. Their contract was renewed this week for another three years at a cost of £108,000. Theirs was the highest priced of three tenders submitted, but was scored highest on quality too.
Councillor McCready said: “I raised concerns about how this fits in with the council’s community benefits from procurement policy.
“The council is committed to securing ‘maximum economic and social benefit from procurement activity.’ I want to see the council give greater prominence to these policies.
“I have met with RBS and raised my concerns, along with Jenny Marra MSP, I want them to reconsider their decision.”
Fellow West End councillor Fraser Macpherson has already got the bank to admit that customer numbers at the branch have not fallen by as much as at many of their other outlets.
He said: “It is disappointing that the bank’s arguments for closure stand up to no scrutiny whatsoever.”
