A Burnley lorry driver has appeared in court charged with being more than three times the legal alcohol limit after a spectacular crash on Dundee’s Kingsway.
Darren Andrew Moorhouse, 40, of 168 Burnley Road, appeared in private before Sheriff McGowan on a petition which alleged he drove with 111 mics of alcohol in his breath.
The legal limit is 35 mics.
He is also charged with dangerous driving on April 24, on the A90 Dundee to Perth road, near the junction of Myrekirk Road, attempting to negotiate the roundabout at excessive speed, losing control of the vehicle and its trailer, which was laden with peat, to topple over, become detached from the tractor unit and fall on to the offside lane of the carriage, colliding with a safety barrier and causing damage to the lorry and the barrier.
He made no plea or declaration and was granted bail with the condition that he does not drive a vehicle, while the case was continued for further examination.
One lane of the dual carriageway was closed for several hours on Thursday, causing huge tailbacks after the articulated lorry’s trailer of peat overturned as it came off the city’s Myrekirk roundabout.
The container slid along the road on its side at a pedestrian crossing before coming to a stop.
The stricken trailer was finally removed early on Friday, 13 hours after the incident.
