Parents of pupils at Kingspark School are being invited to meetings with Dundee’s director of education about child abuse allegations.
Michael Wood is offering to go through the findings of what the authority insists is an independent review.
The development came as First Minister Alex Salmond stepped in to the controversy.
He said: “Any allegations such as this cause understandable concern and should always be looked into thoroughly.”
The examination into the council’s handling of claims that special needs pupils suffered bullying and other forms of physical mistreatment was carried out by independent education officer Alistair Marquis.
He was asked by the Dundee child care and protection committee to review responses and decisions taken about concerns a group of families raised about abuse at the school.
A city council spokesman said parents of Kingspark pupils will be advised of the outcome of Mr Marquis’ review on Thursday May 8.
The meetings will be on the same day that the city council and partner agencies will be advised of the outcome of the review.
The council insists individual family concerns were addressed through child protection procedures and required no further action to be taken.
As a result of the families’ continued concerns the independent review was requested, and council pledged to act upon its recommendations.
But parents have reservations about the way the investigation has been conducted so far and have called for a wider inquiry into the allegations.
