Rickshaw plan for Broughty Ferry Gala

Rickshaw plan for Broughty Ferry Gala

A rickshaw could grace this year’s Broughty Ferry Gala.

The traditional mode of transport, which is found all over the world, would run Gala-goers up and down the Broughty Ferry Esplanade.

Owner Jaclyn Duncan says that the use of the bike will be an exciting addition to the Gala.

“We own the rickshaw ourselves,” she said. “I bought it when my husband was away he came back and said, ‘what have you done?’

“I ride it quite regularly myself, but we also loan it out for events such as weddings and also donate it for charitable causes.

“The plan is to drive people up and down the Esplanade. The rickshaw has a small electric motor as well, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.”

Sandro Paladini of Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association said: “I think it’s a great idea. It adds yet another element of fun and interest to the Broughty Ferry Gala Week.”

The final decision to allow the rickshaw at the gala rests with the city council, which is expected to rule in coming weeks.

The proposal comes after entrepreneur Adam Gierak put a business plan offering privately-hired rickshaws before the city’s licensing committee.

That idea faced opposition from taxi unions and a decision on whether to grant Mr Gierak a licence has been deferred.
