Dundee and St Andrews universities are home to some happy students

Dundee and St Andrews universities have some of the most contented students in the country, according to a survey.

More than 14,000 undergraduates were polled by Times Higher Education to find out which institutions were best meeting their needs.

Dundee University was found to offer the best student experience in Scotland and was joint fourth in the UK.

The quality of accommodation, convenient facilities and cheap amenities earned the rating, along with a second place in the UK table for the best students’ union.

“There is nothing more important to a university than the quality of the experience enjoyed by its students, so to come out top in Scotland and in the UK top five in a major survey like this is very encouraging,” said principal Professor Pete Downes.

“It is a credit to all staff across the institution and also to the students’ association, with whom we have a very good relationship and who work very hard to help deliver quality to students in all aspects of campus life.”

St Andrews University came top in Scotland and fourth in the UK for the quality of its staff and lectures. It was 23rd for overall student experience.

Professor Lorna Milne said: “Our excellent ratings for teaching are a testament to our high academic standards all round. We have world-class staff who demand a great deal of our brilliant students and they love it.”

The survey also provided good news for Stirling University, which came sixth for the quality of its staff and lectures and whose 35th place overall made it the most improved university.
