Monifieth plans a ‘threat’ to Dundee’s Western Gateway ambitions

Dundee’s Western Gateway housing project would be put at risk if 300 houses are built on the edge of Monifieth in neighbouring Angus, a senior city council officer has warned.
City development director Mike Galloway is hoping to persuade councillors to lodge a formal objection to a planning application by housebuilder Barratt, even though the company claims there is a “desperate need” for the homes.
Barratt are one of two companies eager to build on land between the town and the A92 Dundee to Arbroath dual carriageway.
Taylor Wimpey already face a city council objection to their 350-400 home scheme in the area.
Angus Council will rule on both planning applications.
Barratt made a Monifieth Community Council presentation on Wednesday night and said the last 12 months have seen the volume of residential property sales across Dundee and Angus increase by over 40%.
However, Mr Galloway said the greenfield housing supply in Dundee was being focused away from the A92 corridor to the Western Gateway, between the A90 and the villages of Liff and Muirhead.
Springfield Properties have recently submitted a pair of planning applications for a total of 500 houses there.
