Scottish Cup final countdown: 10,000-mile round trip for Dundee United fan Simon

Members of the Guatemalan Dundee United are backing their Scottish namesakes to lift the cup.

Expat Simon Tosh from Broughty Ferry founded the team after moving to the lakeside town of San Pedro La Laguna 13 years ago.

The businessman ended up staying put following a gap year that saw him fall in love with both the area and a local lady, who became the mother of his two children.

Now the owner of a bar, mini market and several rental properties, Simon has the spare cash to fly back for the Scottish Cup final.

However preparations have not gone as smoothly as hoped.

“When we reached the final in 2010 it wasn’t economically possible to return as we had booked a family trip to Scotland in August,” Simon said.

“It was a decision I have regretted ever since, so I promised myself if we ever reached another final I would definitely return.

“When we won the semi against Rangers I informed my family of my intentions. However, there was one problem I had sent my passport two weeks previously to be renewed.”

After speaking to the UK Embassy, Simon made a five-hour trip to collect an emergency travel document only for his flight to be cancelled at short notice.

Fortunately he secured a seat on a later plane before travelling 25 hours to get to a hotel near an airport.

Simon will spend another 25 hours flying back to Scotland to arrive just a few hours ahead of kick-off.

“So after spending £1,500 I am now sitting in a Guatemalan hotel waiting for my journey,” Simon said. “Hopefully my luck has turned and I will arrive in time to see United lift the cup.”
