A popular primary has been struck off a list of schools to benefit from new nursery places.
Longhaugh Primary had previously been earmarked by the council’s city development committee as one of several primaries that would enjoy 320 extra nursery places.
However, in the final report on the expansion, which was approved by the education committee, the Fintry school had been removed. Opposition councillors have demanded answers.
Labour councillor Laurie Bidwell said: “These proposals have put the cart before the horse.
“The list of proposed locations to focus the additional places is different from the list of premises approved at the development committee meeting on April 21.
“Why has Longhaugh Primary School dropped off the list presented to us? How can the education committee be confident that we now have the right list of locations?”
Councillor Richard McCready agreed, saying: “We said at the city development meeting that we would include Longhaugh Primary on the list, but now we will not.
“That change should have been reflected in the report before the education committee. There was clearly a hope that no one would notice that it had been removed.”
Officers responded that it was always the case that the final say would rest with the education committee, while education convener Stewart Hunter reassured members that Longhaugh Primary would not be forgotten by councillors.
The new places were later approved by the committee, with an added Labour amendment that a review should take place in a year’s time to ensure that the expansion has taken place in the right areas.
It is expected that almost 400 Dundee children in total will benefit from the new nursery places for two-year-olds.
