Dundee Civic Trust has expressed concerns about the proposal to shrink Riverside Drive from four lanes to two.
The organisation that encourages the best standards of design in architecture and town planning is sceptical about the benefits of narrowing the western arterial route.
The trust also questions the wisdom of spending money on the scheme when there may be greater priorities.
It is the latest body to voice reservations about the controversial £4.2 million plan by sustainable transport group Sustrans after comments by West End Community Council chairman Andrew McBride, and Graeme Stephen of Dundee Taxi Association.
In the May edition of its newsletter, the trust notes that the proposal for Riverside Drive, between the Tay Rail Bridge and the Tesco public entrance roundabout, has stirred up controversy.
The proposal, supported by city council planners, is part of a project to make the waterfront more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists by creating a footbridge over the railway line linking Riverside Drive to Seabraes and Perth Road.
The overall scheme includes a pedestrian crossing west of the Tesco roundabout and further pedestrian crossings west of the rail bridge, near Barnetts Motors.
There are longer-term plans for crossings at Riverside Nature Park and south of Harris Academy.
“Although city council officers have insisted that cutting the four-lane section of Riverside Drive to two lanes will not cause traffic problems, given the volume of vehicles currently going into the site, even before the flats are occupied, this seems somewhat optimistic,” states the trust in its latest Newsflash.
Dr Nutan Subedi, chairman of Dundee Civic Trust, declined to elaborate on the comments, and would only add: “This is a proposal that we will be following with interest.”
Graeme Brown of Sustrans said the plan is part of a project to reconnect people to the waterfront.
“The council has done a lot of modelling and the capacity just doesn’t require four lanes at that point,” he added.
A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: “This proposal will be considered by committee in due course.”
