Trains delayed after rubbish van hits rail bridge in Monifieth
ByAndrew Liddle
Trains were delayed between Arbroath and Dundee this morning after a rubbish van hit a bridge in Monifieth.
Police were alerted to the crash, on Monifieth’s Tay Street, just before 10am.
It was the second such incident in as many days, after another high vehicle hit a bridge in Broughty Ferry, damaging a sign.
That incident left St Vincent road closed, although it did not affect rail services.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The British Transport Police sent a structural engineer to the bridge. The vehicle suffered minor damage, and there were no injuries.”
The vehicle was a rubbish van, with large metal cages fitted on the back. As a result of the smash all trains between Arbroath and Dundee were delayed.
A statement on the National Rail website said: “A vehicle has struck a bridge in Monifieth. Because of this, trains are were unable to run between Arbroath and Dundee.”
The route has since re-opened.
