New signals have been fitted at Broughty Ferry RNLI lifeboat station.
Residents will know each time the lifeboat is launched as red lights will activate and a warning siren will go off.
The lights, visible 24 hours a day, can be seen on the front of the lifeboat station as well as the slipway from which the inshore lifeboat is launched.
The siren that will be sounded will only go off between the hours of 9am and 9pm so residents are not disturbed during the night.
The lights and siren will be turned off as the lifeboats go to sea, and the crew will continue to be alerted to incidents by their personal pagers.
Laura Rentoul, spokeswoman for the lifeboat station, said: “The two loud bangs of the iconic maroons were withdrawn from service a number of years ago and the general public in the vicinity of the lifeboat station has not since known when the lifeboat has been requested to launch.
“The only giveaway has been the large number of volunteer crew members’ cars arriving at the station.
“Now people will be aware when either of Broughty Ferry’s lifeboats has been called into action as the lights and sirens will be seen and heard.”
As the busiest lifeboat station in Scotland, Broughty Ferry’s lifeboats were called out 105 times last year.
