Dundee’s education convener has admitted there is “no quick fix” to overcrowding at a primary school.
Craigowl Primary has 485 pupils but its official capacity is 434.
The 14 classrooms are not enough for the 18 classes and pupils are being taught in rooms not designated as classrooms.
The school was formed six years ago in a merger of two existing primaries.
A source said: “This situation was always going to happen. The authority continued to admit maximum primary ones to both Brackens and Macalpine for three years, knowing there was not enough room.
“When people raised doubts they were simply told, ‘the numbers will fit’.”
Education convener Stewart Hunter said: “Since it opened Craigowl has been over capacity and the staff and head teacher have used as much of the space as possible in the school for learning and teaching.
“This is a difficult issue we are well aware of but which needs to be resolved in a sustainable way. There is no point in a quick fix as no matter what action is taken, Craigowl is probably going to be over capacity for a couple of years yet.
“The work that is going on reassessing our schools placing requests policy will help.”
