Racist graffiti targeting Dundee’s Polish community has been branded as “mindless and sickening.”
Scores of vile scribbles, one of which refers to “Nazi Polish”, have been splattered across the city and appear to have been written by the same person.
Others scrawls said that “all police are Polish” and “Tesco only hires the Polish”.
Last night, one of the leaders in Dundee’s Polish community slammed the graffiti.
Jan Wojtynski, 21, president of Dundee University’s Polish Society, said: “It is really frustrating.
“This guy is totally mistaken (about Polish history) and he does not represent the views of people in Dundee.
“It is so upsetting that this sort of thing is going on. We as a society are trying to educate people about Polish history and culture to ensure that this does not happen again.”
Polish mother-of-one Aga Gierk, 32, agreed. She said: “I saw one at a bus stop on Blackness Road about a ‘Polish conspiracy’ or something.
“’All posties are Polish’ has appeared too apparently it might be one person doing it, because I’ve seen a couple and they look similar.
“It’s ridiculous and not nice reading it.”
Politicians have also rounded on the “mindless” perpetrator targeting Dundee’s 20,000 strong Polish community.
Craig Melville, convener of Dundee council’s environment committee, said: “It is bad enough that vandals deface our city with their mindless graffiti but to see such blatantly ignorant racist attitudes splattered on our walls just makes me sick.
“Dundee has always been proud of its multi-cultural communities and for hundreds of years has welcomed migrants who within a short time have become integrated into the fabric of the city.
“There is no place for this type of ugly sentiment in Dundee and I would call on the communities in the areas that have been affected to do all they can to help find the culprits.”
The graffiti has appeared across the city, including in the Hilltown, at Dundee railway station and on Kings Cross Road.
The council’s rapid response team for tackling graffiti has removed many of the offensive messages already.
West End councillor Fraser Macpherson urged anyone who sees the slogans to immediately contact the council so it can be removed.
“I am appalled by this mindless graffiti,” he said.
“The reality is that these views are not shared by the vast majority of people in Dundee.
“I would urge members of the public who see this graffiti to contact the council immediately so it can be removed. I am confident the police will catch the person responsible.”
Police Inspector Gary Price said that this sort of crime would not be tolerated in the city.
“We have a database of graffiti images and tags in Dundee and that allows us to link large numbers of crimes together to try to ensure that individuals are held responsible for all of their actions.
“If you see someone involved in this type of anti-social behaviour, or perhaps acting suspiciously with spray cans and/or stencils, contact Tayside Division on 101.”
