Dundee recruitment worker’s Miss Universe bid

Beauty queen Leonna Sylvester is heading to the Miss Universe UK competition.
Beauty queen Leonna Sylvester is heading to the Miss Universe UK competition.

A Dundee beauty hopes to win when she competes to become the Miss Universe contestant for the UK.

Leonna Sylvester, 25, left Dundee on Thursday to prepare for the finals of the Miss Universe Great Britain 2014.

She said she is excited to be competing in London, especially as she missed the closing date to be included.

She said: “I was totally gutted when I missed the closing date at the end of December but thought I would just go for it anyway.

“I applied in February and I didn’t expect to hear anything back but then an organiser contacted me to say someone dropped out.

“I rushed down to London for an interview in April and was accepted, leaving me just eight weeks to prepare.”

As well as a range of beauty treatments Leonna’s training regime has involved four gym sessions a week and a lot of healthy eating.

She said: “I’ve got a great team around me.

“Ashley and Hayley at Glamour Dundee have been amazing helping me get ready and my trainer Martin at Urban Fit in Broughty Ferry has been great.”

As well as modelling a range of garments, including evening gowns and swimwear, Leonna will also be interviewed by the judges to see if she has what it takes to be an ambassador for the UK.

She said: “That’s probably the hardest part. They haven’t told us what they are looking for.

“I think they want intelligent independent women.

“I am just going to go in and be myself and show them just because I am pretty doesn’t mean I am stupid.”

Leonna studied business and finance at university and now works as a recruitment consultant as well as helping out managing a city bar.

She has been involved in modelling since she was 21 and won Miss Trinidad and Tobago UK in 2011 and 2012.

If she wins the UK Miss Universe competition Leonna will go on to compete in the Miss Universe final in the Philippines.

There are 40 girls aged between 18 and 27 in the competition from all over the UK and last year’s winner went on to appear in TV show I’m A Celebrity.

Leonna said: “It is quite nerve racking but you can’t let nerves get to you because a lot of it is about confidence.

“I lot of people think you just have to turn up and look pretty. That’s the easy part.”

Leonna will be counting on votes from members of the public for additional points in the competition and more information is online at Facebook.
