Dundee City Council has ruled out creating a dedicated cycle path along the south side of Riverside Drive.
The decision comes despite a planned £760,000 package of roadworks and environmental improvements designed partly to make the area more welcoming for cyclists and pedestrians.
This includes a shared cycle/footpath on the other side of the road between a new toucan crossing and the footbridge to be built over the railway line linking the waterfront with Seabraes.
A council officer said: “I can confirm that there is not to be a designated cycle path created as the existing path adjacent to the sea wall is a designated part of the National Cycle Route and is of appropriate width for shared use.”
The council said the volume of bicycle traffic was not high enough to justify segregation from pedestrians.
“It is the responsibility of the individual to cycle with respect and due care for other road users in accordance with guidelines in the Highway Code.
“Our accident records show no reported collisions between pedestrian/cyclists on this section of cycle route,” the officer added.
The changes will also include a narrowing of the road to single carriageway between Tesco and the rail bridge and a toucan crossing by the Barnetts garage.
