Dundee’s own “superwoman” severely disabled Scottish International athlete Hannah Craig is set for her most important public duty today.
Hannah, 18, whose C2 incomplete spinal cord injury is similar to that of the late Superman actor, Christopher Reeve, will be carrying the Queen’s baton through the city centre as it travels on its way to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games.
Hannah suffered the high spinal cord injury as a child, but despite the potentially-life threatening condition she has managed to fight her way into the Scotland Boccia team and is just one level away from representing Team GB at the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016.
Hannah propels the bowling balls using a specially adapted ramp from her wheelchair.
Her dad Scott said the family, who live in Shaftesbury Road, are very proud of her achievements, and said all their friends and family will be out to cheer her on in the baton relay today.
He said: “Hannah has limited movement in her right arm that allows her to move about in her wheelchair by using the joystick.
“She has a very similar injury to what Christopher Reeve had it’s a very high spinal cord injury.
“She’s done really well though, and has always been determined to do as much as she can in life.
“She has represented Scotland in the national championships and is basically just below the Team GB level.
“She would like to aim for the paralympic games in Rio, that would be great if it happened.”
Hannah is picking up the Queen’s Baton outside Groucho’s in Nethergate at 9.30am and will carry it up to just past the Queen’s Hotel.
Scott added: “She’s really looking forward to it, all our in-laws and out-laws, all the relatives will be turning up to cheer her on. She’s very excited about doing it.
“She was put forward by Dundee Disability Sports.”
Hannah is now looking forward to starting her sports and computing course at Dundee & Angus College, based at Gardyne.
