Dundee City Council has begun legal action against a group of Travellers who have set up camp in Charleston.
The group parked around 15 caravans and vehicles on open ground off Myrekirk Road on Thursday. There is no fence or rock armour to prevent vehicles gaining access to the site.
A council spokeswoman said: “Dundee City Council is working with Police Scotland and we have started the legal process to have the Travellers removed.
“We have also advised them of the designated Traveller facilities available at Balmuir Wood.”
One of the Travellers, Joe Joyce, said: “We are from Ireland and arrived last night from Aberdeen. We’ll be away again today, we’re just here for a stop-over before heading to Newcastle.”
Lochee councillor Tom Ferguson said: “The people of Lochee have had it up to their teeth with unauthorised sites. You can never keep on top of the situation, because just as one group leaves another comes.
“We are fed up with the lack of action. If there was continuous monitoring of these camps on a daily basis, that might help to keep things tidy.”
Stella Carrington, chairman of Charleston Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, said: “There are designated places for Travellers to camp, but they refuse to go there.
“We have every respect for Travellers and their way of life, but they must also take responsibility and respect our way of life as well.”
