Travellers camped out in Myrekirk Park in Dundee moved on over the weekend, leaving a large amount of mess behind.
A Dundee City Council van was loaded with waste from the site, including black bags filled with rubbish, and in some cases human excrement.
The Travellers also left toilet tissue in the surrounding trees, and used the 5,000-year-old stone circle as a washing line.
Children’s toys, empty propane tanks and food waste were also scattered around the city beauty spot.
Locals were unable to use the park over the sunny weekend because of the presence of the Travellers and their mess.
Council employees took almost two hours to clear the site, and remarked that it was an unusually large amount of waste.
The Travellers had approximately 15 caravans and cars, and stayed from Thursday until Sunday.
One of the Travellers had previously told The Courier they were stopping over in Tayside and Fife before heading south to Newcastle.
Although the site is now cleaned, there is frustration at Dundee taxpayers having to repeatedly foot the bill to clear up after Travellers.
Councillor Tom Ferguson, whose ward covers the park, said: “I think we got lucky that they only stayed a couple of days.
“It’s at least half the fault of the council the Traveller community isn’t monitored closely enough.
“I’ve said time and again that we need to get down and do a full costing, and know how much Travellers are going to cost the city.”
The Travellers have again chosen not to use the official site at Balmuir Wood.
A Traveller encampment on grassland next to Riverside Drive had also moved on by Monday, and the site was also cleaned at city expense.
The cost of clearing Traveller sites is a sore point for the city after it cost £10,000 to clear up a site at Claverhouse last year.
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “The Travellers have now moved from Myrekirk Park. Staff from the environmental department have since cleared the site.”
