A 150-year-old mansion in Perth Road can be turned into a boutique hotel, the city council has decided.
Taypark Lodge, which was built in the Scots Baronial style, still has many of its original features including fine plasterwork, stained glass and a marble fireplaces.
In recent decades it has been a guest house, a nursing home and latterly Dundee University offices.
Taypark Ltd plans to turn it into a nine-bedroom hotel with a lounge, bar, dining room and function room.
They already operate a nearby B&B and in their planning application they said: “Taypark will allow us to take our services to the next level and provide first-class accommodation while preserving and utilising this fine building.”
A council planning officer said the proposal would breach a policy that sought to focus hotel investment in the city centre and central Broughty Ferry.
However, suitable alternative uses did have to be considered for listed buildings.
“It is considered that the proposal will result in the retention and restoration of a B-listed, former jute mansion, which was once very characteristic of this part of Dundee.
“It will provide a small boutique hotel, which will add to the range and choice of visitor accommodation in the city, whilst ensuring the retention and restoration of the building as a single entity.”
