Lochee High Street is suffering traffic turmoil thanks to poor planning and lazy drivers, it has been claimed.
Drivers take up loading bays, there are reports of taxis parking in the limited number of disabled bays, and delivery drivers block the pavement when they can’t get a parking space.
And thanks to the narrow streets, every bus, bin lorry and HGV causes the roads to grind to a complete standstill.
One taxi driver, who did not wish to be named, called the entire system a “shambles”.
He said: “Nobody was consulted when they put in this one-way system.
“They put the taxi rank up next to the pub and the salon, where nobody wants to get a taxi.”
Taxi drivers have set up an impromptu rank in the High Street in standard parking spaces, but there are regularly more cabs than the three spaces will allow.
The streets funnel traffic down a single path, but well-used bus stops on the High Street cause buses to stop in places where drivers can’t pass them.
Large car parks in the area are not signposted, meaning people often miss them.
Mary Moonie, a Lochee resident, said: “They cause chaos. My husband is disabled and sometimes I’ve had to stop in the street, holding everyone up, so he can get out.
“Taxis regularly park in the disabled bay, where they have no right to park. I’ve tried complaining to the council but they haven’t listened.”
Lochee councillor Tom Ferguson said the Lochee High Street issue is under scrutiny.
He added: “I’m well aware of all the difficulties people have and we are trying our best to take care of it.
“My view is that it hasn’t been nipped in the bud by the council early enough. We don’t want Lochee to be a no-go area, we want it to be car friendly.
“Lochee High Street only works if the parking works.
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said the redevelopment of Lochee High Street is still taking shape as part of the multi-million-pound regeneration of the area.
He added: “A new transport hub at Bank Street, which is due to open soon, will create a new stopping space for buses which will allow other traffic to pass and flow more smoothly.
“This hub will also include a new taxi rank, which has been developed with the input of local taxi drivers. We are also looking at ways of advising taxi drivers about rank capacity.
“The recently-opened free car park at Bank Street will help increase footfall in the area.
“The new road layout is an essential part in making sure the project is a success.”
