A young driver who smashed through a wall knocking down a lamp-post was thankful to be alive after losing control on a corner that has seen four crashes in four years.
The 21-year-old driver and his passenger were shaken but uninjured in the crash which left the car resting on live electrical cables from the lamp-post.
The driver said afterwards: “I can’t believe we came out of that alive. I am gutted. I only got the car on my 21st six months ago.”
The Honda Civic suffered extensive damage in the smash which happened on Nursery Road in Broughty Ferry during the wet weather on Saturday afternoon.
Police were at the scene for several hours from around 2.45pm and a careful recovery operation was carried out, made more difficult because of the live electrical cables from the lamp-post.
Electrical engineers were called in to make the crash site safe before the vehicle could be removed and officers directed traffic around the accident while this was ongoing.
Officers said the driver had lost control after the corner in the wet conditions and there was no evidence of excessive speed being used.
Traffic officer PC Simon Lee said: “The male driver was travelling west and had just come around the corner when he lost control in the wet conditions and went into the wall, causing damage to the wall and the car.
“Both the driver and the passenger walked away uninjured. They are both a little bit shaken but other than that they are OK.”
As well as the damage to the car and lamp-post, a large section of the six foot side wall of a Campfield Road property was taken down.
The 71-year-old home owner said she was “very upset” that her wall had been hit again and blames the corner for sending so many motorists through her garden wall.
She said it was only a matter of time before either a child on the pavement or a driver is seriously injured and is appealing for a pedestrian barrier from the council.
She said: “I am very upset that it has happened again and I am frightened for any kids walking along there who might get hurt.”
She was in the kitchen when the accident happened and said: “I did hear a noise but the last thing I thought was that it would be the wall getting knocked down again.
“The first I knew was when the police knocked at the door. The dog got a fright and came through with its tail between its legs but I thought it had knocked something over.
“I wasn’t expecting it to get knocked down in the middle of summer. I feel shattered that it has happened again.”
