Detailed proposals for a multi-million-pound sports complex in Dundee could be revealed by the end of this month.
It is a year to the day since the city lost out in the bidding to host the National Performance Centre for Sport.
When the project was awarded to Edinburgh, Scottish Government chiefs insisted Dundee would still get a centre of its own.
Local representatives have spent the past year scrutinising possible locations and facilities for a regional sports centre.
A meeting for the steering group in charge of driving the project forward is due to take place at the end of this month.
Dundee City Council leader Ken Guild said: “The centre will definitely be happening. There’s no doubt about that.
“At the moment we are trying to decide exactly what is going to be put into it.
“There will be a lot of emphasis on football, but we are in discussion with our colleagues in sport-scotland and various sports bodies in Scotland.
“We are also looking at facilities in Dundee. We don’t want to duplicate what already exists. Once we have that in place we will go ahead with the plans.”
Potential sites for the complex include Camperdown Park and Caird Park, which were the locations originally proposed for the national centre.
Mr Guild added: “We would be keen to start work on the centre as soon as possible, but when work begins will depend on the needs of the various sports bodies.”
Councillor Stewart Hunter, who is on the steering committee, hopes to announce more details soon. He said: “There needs to be sports with a background in the city and we need to give them facilities we don’t have, so it’s all about striking a balance.
“We can’t say what sports are being considered at the moment, but we are hoping to make an announcement in the near future.”
A sportscotland spokesman added: “We have provided advice and guidance to the council, including sharing examples of good practice from regional facilities already in place in Scotland.”
