North Carr lightship’s foghorn to signal First World War anniversary
ByThe Courier Reporter
The sound of the North Carr lightship’s foghorn will be heard across the city as it signals the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War on Saturday.
At 6pm the lightship, which is berthed in Victoria Dock close to the Apex Hotel, will sound several long blasts of about 30 seconds each, in line with many other ships.
The original sound-generating mechanism for the foghorn was removed when the lightship came out of service in 1974.
However, a replacement has been fabricated in the workshop on board the vessel by adults with learning disabilities who work and train with Taymara, the charity which owns North Carr.
The sound, greatly amplified by the horn itself, will be heard as far as Tayport.
Members of the public are invited to join the ceremony, gathering from 5.30pm, and more information is at www.northcarr-lightship.org.
