A disabled Dundee mother was rescued by her seven-year-old son after she was trapped by her wheelchair.
Lyndsay Bremner’s electric wheelchair became caught in a pothole on Helmsdale Avenue in Kirkton, causing the wheel to come off.
The mother-of-three, who was strapped in by a seatbelt, then fell on the road with the wheelchair tipping over on top of her.
The 36-year-old suffers from Arnold-Chiari malformation, a brain condition which has paralysed the left side of her body. The incident, which happened on Saturday afternoon, left her with a sore back, as well as a swollen wrist and hand.
Her son Devin Hebden was on hand to bring help, as she explained: “I wasn’t far from home when I was going down a lowered pavement to cross the road.
“There was a pothole between the smooth road and the pavement. My wheel must have got caught in the pothole and a bolt snapped off. The whole wheel then came off and the wheelchair tipped.
“I was wearing a seatbelt and the wheelchair fell on top of me. There was nobody else about and I was lucky to have my son, Devin, with me.”
He rushed home, fetching his older brothers Declan, 15, and Dylan, 10, to help.
Lyndsay had no choice but to stay where she was under her wheelchair on the road at the mercy of oncoming drivers.
She added: “To begin with Devin was very scared, but he thought on his feet and went to get help. I was then lying on the road for about 10 minutes. If a car had come by it would have been dangerous.
“Declan then came, lifted me up and put me in a manual wheelchair and Dylan wheeled me home. It’s just unbelievable how bad the roads and kerbs are the surfaces aren’t stable enough for wheelchairs.”
The accident happened on an unadopted stretch of road at the bottom of Helmsdale Avenue near to Balgowan Avenue.
