A Dundee man has been disqualified after he forgot driving to his house after a night drinking in Broughty Ferry.
Raymond Maxwell, 50, admitted driving while more than three times over the limit.
The court heard how he had been enjoying a night out in a Broughty Ferry pub when he spotted his car that he had parked a few days previously.
He then got behind the wheel and was seen driving slowly and erratically by two motorists on Monifieth Road.
They contacted the police and followed Maxwell to his Fortar Way home, where he got out and attempted to get into his house, despite dropping his keys.
Maxwell then spotted the pair of concerned motorists and asked them if they were OK, before retreating to bed.
Police attended at the scene and, despite attempts to rouse Maxwell, eventually had to force entry to the property, where he was found slumped on an upstairs bed.
He refused to give a breath sample to officers and was arrested.
Appearing before Sheriff Elizabeth Munro, almost 12 hours after the offences, Maxwell said he could not remember why he refused to give a breath sample nor where his car was.
His solicitor said: “He is a genuine first offender he is ashamed and embarrassed. He had been employed in the offshore industry but was recently made unemployed.
“He was married for 25 years and his divorce papers came through a couple of days before this incident. He has to move on now and get his life back on track.”
Sheriff Munro fined Maxwell £600 and banned him from driving for 20 months.
She said: “It is dreadful to see a man like you sitting in the dock. I do not want to make you any more miserable.”
Maxwell pleaded guilty to driving on Monifieth Road with 125 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath and to a separate charge of refusing to provide a breath sample without reasonable excuse.
