Construction of the proposed V&A museum in Dundee has moved a step closer with the naming of the company the council wants to build the tourist attraction.
Councillors will be asked on Monday to appoint BAM Construction Ltd as the preferred main contractor in the multi-million-pound project.
The meeting of the city council’s policy and resources committee will hear that the company’s selection followed a full assessment of tenders submitted by several firms.
The exact timescales and costs of the project are still to be finalised, but city chiefs see it as a big moment in the project’s development.
Councillor Ken Guild, leader of the council’s administration, said: “This is a major milestone in the project to provide a world-class building to house the V&A Museum of Design Dundee.
“Our city’s profile is already benefiting from our association with the V&A and the breathtaking vision of Kengo Kuma’s building.
“Dundee’s ongoing and ambitious regeneration will reach another level when the construction phase begins.
“Our local partnership behind the initiative is working together to take the project forward as it is a hugely important investment in the future of our city.”
BAM Construction Ltd, whose head office is in London, also has offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The company is currently involved in large-scale projects in Birmingham and Glasgow.
Councillors will be told that, before a fixed price tender for the works is finalised, the local authority will engage in discussions with the preferred contractor to refine their proposals.
This means that the council would be required to enter into a pre-construction services agreement with BAM Construction.
A tender report would then be brought back to the council in due course seeking agreement to the proposed construction cost for the project.
