Internet trolls have sabotaged the Wikipedia page of one of Dundee’s fastest developing communities to denounce it as a playground for drug dealers.
The edits on one of the world’s most popular websites have caused consternation among those working to improve the city’s Hilltown area.
The free online encyclopedia describes the Hilltown as boasting “varying levels of attractiveness from ugly to absolutely barkett”.
It also notes “Hilltown is one of the oldest parts of the city and retains a character of its own if you like drug dealing” and that traditional industry had been “superseded by the drug trade”.
Furious city councillor Jimmy Black said the hurtful entries could be damaging to the community and described them as “hugely unfair”.
The user-generated nature of Wikipedia enables a wealth of new information to be added, but also leaves the pages open to abuse although moderators can remove and amend erroneous entries.
Mr Black said: “I am furious with whoever has done this as it gives a misleading impression of the community and is really unfair to the vast majority of decent and hardworking people who live there.
“We are doing our best to keep the city and the Hilltown looking good and have expended a lot of money and energy on rejuvenating the Hilltown.”
