Stewart Hosie sealed the SNP’s domination in Dundee by claiming a huge victory in Dundee East.
Voters flocked to the polls in both city constituencies, with 48,258 voting in Dundee East and 44,760 casting ballots in Dundee West turnouts of 71.15% and 67.9% respectively.
Mr Hosie, the SNP’s deputy leader, praised the local party’s campaign after he beat Labour’s Lesley Brennan by almost 20,000 votes and said there had been a “sea change” in Scottish politics.
Mr Hosie said: “The wins in Dundee were a great result, one of many confident victories across Scotland.
“I’m delighted to have been rewarded by the people of Dundee with a third term.
“There is clearly a sea change.”
Ms Brennan paid tribute to her campaign team who “didn’t fail for lack of trying”.
She also took a thinly veiled swipe at her SNP opponent, saying she would ensure he kept his promises to the people of Dundee.
Officials from Dundee’s Labour party, the SNP’s main rivals in the city, insisted they had fought the best campaign they could, but cautioned that the national picture particularly the popularity of Nicola Sturgeon had not worked in their favour.
