Menzieshill High School campaigners to gather on day of council vote

Campaigners are to take their fight to save Menzieshill High School to the streets.

A peaceful protest against the proposed closure of the school is to be held in City Square on June 22 the night the council meets to discuss the school’s future.

Councillors are to take a vote on the future of the school closure proposal, which has attracted opposition from the community.

Pupils, parents and grandparents are expected to be among those who will lobby councillors as they make their way to a meeting of the education committee.

The protest is scheduled to begin at 5.15pm, with the meeting expected to start at 6.

Chairman of the Save Menzieshill Campaign, the Rev Bob Mallinson, said: “We have already said this fight isn’t over and we meant it. We are hopeful that many members of the Menzieshill and Charleston communities will join us at the protest.

“We plan to be there to protest peacefully as councillors arrive for the meeting.”

Mr Mallinson said four different groups would speak at the meeting against the council’s plans for closure.

He added: “The campaign group has asked to speak to the committee.

“I hope to speak against the closure myself and there have been requests for two further deputations; one from parents and another from pupils.”

He said that the campaign group would be asking the council to put a moratorium on the plans.

Mr Mallinson added: “I will also speak in my capacity as the parish minister about how the proposed closure will adversely affect the entire community.”
