The family of a Dundee University student who died last year at the age of 24 travelled from their home in the United States to mark his graduation.
Alex Nordquist died of a lung infection last November during the final year of his international relations course, but was awarded a posthumous degree at the Caird Hall.
As mum Barbara and father Bob looked on, brother Thomas stepped onto the stage to accept the degree.
Bob said: “At the moment we are feeling a mixture of pride and sadness. Alex’s passing remains raw for us, but we felt it was important that we pay tribute to our son and his many achievements.”
As the final graduations of the year took place, the university became the first in the UK to produce medical graduates through the Brazilian government’s Science Without Borders scheme.
Dr Iain Murray, a lecturer in the university’s School of Computing, was part of the traditional academic procession across City Square and on to the Caird Hall.
He then watched as his daughter Kirsten, 23, a former Monifieth High School pupil, graduated in medicine.
Honorary degrees were presented to author and campaigner Dr Jung Chang, film director Bill Forsyth and child health expert Professor Neil Buist.
