Dundee MP Chris Law happy to be the tail of Westminster
ByThe Courier Reporter
Dundee West SNP MP Chris Law has joked that he is happy to soak up media attention for his appearance to divert it away from both men and women in the Commons.
Mr Law, who replaced Labour’s Jim McGovern, also compared himself to eminent Scottish Labour politician Keir Hardie, who also “attracted negative comments about his working man’s garb”.
Making his maiden speech in the House of Commons, Mr Law said: “It has come to my attention that since my election it is apparent that I have attracted some media headlines for my striking and handsome appearance, notably my ponytail.
“I come in a good tradition of Scottish nationals critiqued for such matters.
“It has not gone without my notice however that this attention is generally reserved by the media for my female colleagues.
“I would just like to say that not only am I happy to take up this mantle for the male contingent of this House, but also on behalf of all my female colleagues both here and across the House.”
