Firebugs thought to have started car blaze in Dundee

Police in Dundee have launched an investigation after a car was destroyed in a suspicious blaze.

The vehicle is thought to have been torched in the city’s Maitland Street in the early hours of Friday morning.

It was well alight when fire crews attended shortly before 3am and flames were beginning to spread to adjacent vehicles.

The fire was swiftly extinguished, but not before the car had been burnt out and a second vehicle damaged.

A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed that a probe has been launched.

“The incident at Maitland Street is being treated as suspicious and police inquiries are on-going,” he said.

The owner of the vehicle declined to comment on the fire, but neighbours recalled what they’d seen when it broke out.

Cleaner Jeanette McKay, 52, said she was in her bed when she heard what she believed was fireworks coming from outside.

“It went on for a bit and I could hear it crackling so I looked out of the window and saw that the car was on fire,” she said.

“I jumped up and phoned the fire brigade straight away.

“The car was up in flames and it only seemed to take a second before it really took hold and the fire was really raging.”

Another resident from Maitland Street said: “It’s shocking to see something like this happen here because it’s pretty quiet usually.

“Let’s just hope the police can get hold of whoever started it because it could have been a lot worse by the looks of things.”

Anyone who may have seen the incident or who knows how it started should call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
