The boss behind plans to convert a disused factory into a multi-purpose sports facility is pledging to battle on with the bid despite a fire ripping through the building.
An application was due to be placed to convert the former Wood Group factory into five football pitches and a multi-court for futsal, basketball and badminton, run by Active Soccer on a temporary basis for five years.
But the bid has been thrown into doubt after the building was badly damaged in the blaze.
An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire, but despite the severe damage, the owners of the building have confirmed to Active Soccer they will not change their mind on the planning bid.
Active Soccer’s Dundee director, Brian Smith, said: “I had no idea about the fire but I’ve had a quick look and the company which owns the building have said that once the investigation is finished they will carry on with the plans.
“From what I’ve seen the back of the building is a bit damaged, so hopefully sufficient repairs will be made if they need to be done.”
If given the go-ahead, the centre could bring 30 new jobs to the city and even provide a training ground for local football clubs when pitches are unplayable during the winter.
The former factory in Baldovie Industrial Estate went up in flames on Friday and initial investigations indicate that it was started deliberately. Wood Group closed the factory used to manufacture gas turbines in 2007.
