Lives being risked on Broughty Ferry crossing every day
ByThe Courier Reporter
As many as seven motorists a day have been reported for breaking the law at a level crossing in Broughty Ferry, police have revealed.
The crossing on Gray Street was monitored this week by British Transport Police, using a van financed by Network Rail, to increase awareness for both pedestrians and drivers of the dangers.
Stephen Gray, a civilian camera enforcement officer with BTP said: “The most we have reported in one day at this crossing is seven.
“The very first time I was here, a car had moved out into the box junction but had to stop because of the traffic ahead, so the driver was reported for that. Then the lights started flashing and I saw the car making a left turn.
“My heart stopped because I thought the driver had decided to drive down the track a bit to avoid the train.
“Fortunately, there is a small lane on the south side of the crossing that we couldn’t see and the driver had gone down it to get out of the way.
“I’ve seen a few scary moments with pedestrians zig-zagging across the line as the gates are coming down.
“A vehicle is one thing, but a signalman might not see someone who has tripped up and think that all is fine.”
