Dundee scientist sued by widow of car crash victim

A Dundee scientist, who admitted causing a car crash that led to the death of an elderly man, is being sued by the dead man’s widow.

Elizabeth Highcock, 80, has confirmed she is seeking damages from 35-year-old Nathan Bailey.

Bailey, a St Andrews University academic, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving when he appeared at Stirling Sheriff Court.

He admitted losing control of his car on the M9 near Stirling on April 28 2013 and hitting a car being driven by Ronald Highcock, of Prestwick.

Mr and Mrs Highcock had been driving home from a weekend away to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Mrs Highcock said: “My solicitors are dealing with this matter for me but I can confirm that we are going back to court.”

A spokesman for Digby Brown Solicitors said: “We have raised actions in the Court of Session on behalf of Mrs Highcock and her family for the injury and loss they suffered as a result of this tragic incident. As the matter is ongoing, we are not in a position to comment further at this stage.”

Mr Bailey, who was sentenced to 200 hours’ community service and a one-year driving ban, could not be contacted.
