Norman Maynard, a former head of speech and drama at Dundee College of Education and a director of Dundee Repertory Theatre, has died at the age of 85.
A Londoner, he had an extensive career in the UK and overseas, and was the author of academic books and articles.
Mr Maynard grew up in Hackney, where his father was a painter and decorator, and he went to teacher training college where he qualified to teach English.
While teaching in schools he studied externally at London University and graduated with a BA honours degree.
With this qualification he decided to pursue a career as a college lecturer and took his family abroad.
He held posts in southern Africa then travelled to the West Indies where he lectured in Trinidad and Barbados.
He brought his family back to the UK in the late 1960s when he secured a post at the former college of education in Dundee.
Speech and drama became a special interest and he eventually became head of that department.
Among the activities he gave his expertise to was Arena Productions, the amateur dramatics society for students and staff at the college.
He acted in and directed a production of A Man for All Seasons in 1983, the cast including his wife June.
Mr Maynard retired after Dundee College of Education became part of Northern College.
He was appointed to the board of Dundee Rep in 1975 and his tenure included the project to move from the company’s St Mary’s Place venue to the present theatre when it opened in 1982.
He is survived by June, daughters Lesley, Ruth and Rosalind, son Timothy and eight grandchildren.
