A property tycoon says work on a massive new Dundee housing development could begin in just over a month.
On Monday, councillors gave the green light to the second part of the Western Gateway project, paving the way for almost 400 homes to be built to the west of the city.
The decision to approve the plans brought an end to a long-running saga over the Dykes of Gray village, which began after a “comedy of errors” saw elected officials approve only one half of the application.
Sandy Adam, the property developer behind the scheme, said he now hoped work would be under way at the site by June.
The chairman of Springfield Properties said: “We are pleased with the decision to approve our Dykes of Gray planning application.
“We listened to the feedback from Dundee City Council in December and amended the points of concern in the application presented on Monday night.
“We are planning to build a range of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes, all designed to complement the area.
“With planning approved, Springfield is determined to have a sales office on site as early as June 2015.”
In their new application, Springfield Properties included additional detail on commercial uses for village buildings, as well as a detailed education statement.
The property group also agreed to contribute around £3 million towards a new primary school and nursery in the development.
It is estimated that more than 200 additional pupils will move into the area by the time the two phases are complete and councillors had feared that nearby schools would be swamped as a result.
The Western Gateway has been identified as a major development opportunity for Dundee for more than a decade.
A number of different developments on different sites have been considered, with a number of developers involved previously without significant progress.
Council officers had recommended the Springfield Properties application for approval, despite the fact it did not fully comply with the Dundee Local Development Plan.
