A man went on a drunken rampage swinging two baseball bats and damaging cars in the street after drinking at New Year, a court has heard.
John Duncan, 20, of Beauly Crescent, appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court on Thursday and admitted damaging vehicles and breaching bail by being outside his home address while subject to a curfew.
The court heard the keepers of vehicles parked in Newton Road had reported the offences to the police.
Depute fiscal Laura Bruce said: “At around 9.30pm on December 31, numerous calls were made to police about people fighting in the street but the accused was not traced at that time.
“Later at about quarter to one in the morning of January 1 residents in the street heard car alarms going off outside.
“They saw the accused walking down the street with two baseball bats he was swinging in his hands.
“One resident shouted towards him and at that point the accused smashed the windscreen of his car.”
Duncan admitted wilfully and recklessly damaging the front windscreen of a Fiat Doblo and smashing the rear windscreen and the glass door panel of a Volkswagen Passat while he was on bail.
His defence solicitor Kris Gilmartin told the court Duncan had been taking steps to rid himself of his alcohol problem, and because he had not consumed alcohol for a while it had affected him badly at New Year.
He said: “He cannot consume alcohol and because he hadn’t been drinking for a while it exacerbated the offence.”
Sheriff Munro told Duncan she had no alternative than to give him a custodial sentence.
She said: “This is appalling behaviour with your record. This is your third conviction for vandalism and you breach court orders and bail I don’t know how often.”
He was sentenced to a total of 11 months in jail.
