A Dundee man who was hospitalised by a Royal Marine during a brawl outside a pub has labelled his attacker’s sentence as “shocking”.
Ryan Wordsworth, 27, was ordered to pay Darren Mackie and Grant Kilhooley a total of £500 compensation after he admitted launching a vicious assault on them outside a pub in Broughty Ferry in April.
The brawl involved six men, including Wordsworth, who is stationed at RM Condor in Arbroath with 45 Commando.
The attack resulted in one of his victims, Mr Mackie, being taken to hospital.
Mr Mackie, 19, said the assault was completely unprovoked and that he was still suffering the effects of the incident.
He added: “It was my mate’s birthday and we were on a night out. I walked outside the pub and he started punching me.
“It was completely random I didn’t even know who he was.”
The incident left Mr Mackie requiring hospital treatment for a broken thumb, a cut lip and a swollen eye.
He added: “I was in a cast for two weeks, but my thumb didn’t heal and I ended up having to get an operation on it.
“It’s always at the back of my mind. There are people walking about that want to do you harm for no reason.”
He described the sentence as “shocking”.
He said: “You walk about attacking people for no reason and all you get is a fine.
“I was off work for two-and-a-half months. Financially, I was really struggling.
“That kind of sentence isn’t going to make him think twice next time.”
