The relatives of residents at a Broughty Ferry care home have defended its record following a damning inspection report.
The Care Inspectorate hit Brae Cottage with five improvement notices last month and gave management just a few weeks to address their concerns.
Two of the notices regarding heating and radiator safety had to be fixed by the end of February.
By the end of March the home has to have completed environmental risk assessments and demonstrate proper records are kept when restraint is used.
Finally, it has to improve staffing levels.
However, relatives of some of the home’s residents say the report paints a “misleading picture” of the standard of care.
Wilma Mudie’s mother, who suffers from dementia and Parkinson’s, has been a resident of the home for three years.
She said: “The care my mum gets is excellent otherwise she wouldn’t have been in there for three years. I worked for 25 years in old folk’s homes and wondered if the home would even take my mum because she needs so much care, but they do manage her care.”
Mrs Mudie added: “Since my mum has come here she has put on weight and it has been stable.
“I just do not feel the report gave a true reflection of the care here.”
The Care Inspectorate improvement notices said a radiator in one room had been broken for three days.
“That was my mother’s room, but she was moved into another one until it was fixed,” said Mrs Mudie.
Helen Elder, whose father has been a resident of Brae Cottage for four years, also praised the standard of care.
She said: “They check on residents every two hours through the night.”
The Care Inspectorate’s latest report on Brae Cottage concludes: “Overall, residents and their families expressed satisfaction with the service.
“They got on well with the staff team and spoke positively about the service.
“We identified a number of environmental improvements which were needed to ensure the safety of residents.
“Some of these remain outstanding from the last inspection and some were identified at this inspection.”
The Care Inspectorate would not disclose when they will revisit Brae Cottage to check the necessary improvements have been made.
