Firefighters attended the site of the new Harris Academy after locals reported hearing an electrical explosion.
According to homeowners, “bright flashes” could be seen coming from the area.
Firefighters attended the site, operated by Scottish and Southern Energy, shortly before 10pm on Sunday night.
Ian Davis, 21, who lives in the area, told The Courier he was alerted to the incident after smelling burning and seeing bright flashing lights.
He revealed: “Myself and others living at West Park heard loud noises and bright flashes coming from Harris Academy.
“When we left the building, some of us could smell burning.
“I left to see what the noise was and what the flashes were. Initially I thought it was from the West Park car park, but when outside I could see that it was from around the entrance to the new Harris Academy building.
“I was initially a bit concerned that it may have been an important gas line-that could have triggered a major fire.”
A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed they had received reports of an electrical explosion from concerned locals.
He said: “We received a call at 9.46pm last night reporting a fire in the open which was seen from across the road.
“It turned out to be an electrical explosion in a mains cable.”
An SSE spokesman said: “Water got into one of our underground cables.
“This led to a bit of smoke.
“There was no damage to any machinery.
“Safety remains our number one priority.”
